In the current climate, and with the summer holiday season fast approaching, many people will be considering their options and probably choosing to stay in the UK rather than running the risk of the uncertainties associated with flying abroad.
Staycation was the term initially used to refer to a holiday where you stayed at home and did days out but always returned home to sleep. Nowadays, the word – a combination of stay and vacation – is used to refer to a holiday in your own country. There are quite a few benefits of the staycation; there is less traveling for a start, no need for holiday jabs, and of course, no language barrier.

The Lake District
If you are looking for an active holiday with some truly spectacular scenery, then you really can’t go wrong with the Lake District. If you love walking and the great outdoors, then the area which inspired the poet William Wordsworth and was the subject of the seven books that make up the Wainwright walking guides is the perfect destination.
With gentle lakeside walks, fell walking, and some of the best peaks in the UK, the area has something to offer to walkers of all abilities. If you love cycling, especially off-road, then there you will be in your element here as well, with plenty of trails to follow.
Whether you are looking to base yourself in one location or travel around, you will find accommodation ranging from bunkhouses to campsites, youth hostels to hotels, and plenty of yurts, cabins, and even holiday cottages.
Cornwall and Devon
The south coast, in particular Cornwall and Devon, is an incredibly popular destination for a staycation and is often a little warmer and sunnier than those locations further up the country. It is also a great destination if you want to partake in some water-based activities.
Cornwall is famed for its surfing, and whether you are a novice or an experienced surfer, there are plenty of beaches to choose from, offering a range of different wave types. There are also plenty of places to hire surfing equipment if you are starting out, but you will probably want to bring your own surf towel.
With plenty of rolling countryside and the nearby Jurassic coast, the area is also great for walking. Of course, it’s also an ideal location for some of those other beach activities such as swimming and surfboarding and even learning to sail – you certainly won’t find yourself bored here.
Wales
We are spoilt in the UK to have access to some breath-taking scenery. With its rugged coastline, Snowdonia National Park, and stunning countryside Wales has something to offer you for your staycation that nowhere else in the country does.
Wales is home to over 600 castles, which is, in fact, more per square mile than anywhere else in the world, so if you want to explore the rich history of Wales, this is the perfect place to start. Whilst some of the castles are little more than ruins, there are plenty like Beaumaris and Caernarfon that offer a great insight into what life must have been like during the 13th and early 14th century.
Wherever you decide to go on your staycation, one thing is sure, and that is that you won’t be disappointed with some of the genuinely spectacular gems that the UK has to offer.
