6 Tips For Starting Again After Leaving A Toxic Relationship

Love is a beautiful thing, but sometimes, it just doesn’t work out and we have to remove ourselves from a toxic situation

Following a break from a relationship that makes us unhappy, there’s a great future ahead, but the immediate aftermath is definitely a challenge. You’re rebuilding a new life for yourself, so it’s bound to be a little bit messy. 

To help you get on the right path during this challenging and difficult time, here are six tips for starting again after leaving a toxic relationship:

1. A Financial Boost

Divorce is expensive, moving out on your own is expensive, getting a new ‘single and ready to mingle’ outfit and hairdo are expensive – the whole thing is expensive. You may find you need a financial boost of some kind to help, whether that’s with an advance at work, no interest loans, or selling your wedding dress. Don’t be ashamed to seek financial assistance – it’s only temporary, and you’ll be on your feet again in no time. 

2. Allow Yourself To Rediscover Who You Are

So often in relationships, especially toxic ones, we can feel like half (or less) of a person. We lose our sense of self, and oftentimes after a breakup, you can feel quite lost. Allow yourself time to rediscover who you are now. It will take time and plenty of harsh truths, but it’s important, and it will lead you to happiness eventually.

3. Invest In Therapy

Around 1 in 4 people in the world will have some sort of mental health issue during any given year. Though you may not feel depressed or anxious after your breakup, if it was truly toxic, there are probably a few things to unpack. Investing in therapy is a really great thing to do if you have the budget for it. It’s like a mental clear out, leaving you with clarity and strength, ready for better days. 

4. Lean On Friends & Family

No human is an island, and that is very true when it comes to breakups. Lean on those you love and allow them to help you keep you going through the hardest times. Don’t be afraid to have a friend clear out too during this time of change. Divorces and breakups of long-term relationships often lead to the loss of certain friendships, so it’s important to get comfortable with this added layer of difficulty.  

5. Grieve

People often associate grief with death, but there are other reasons in life that we grieve. Divorce is one of the big ones. Allow yourself the time to grieve, to ugly cry, to comfort eat, to get rose-tinted glasses, and to smash them up again. It’s all part of the process of moving on. 

6. Get A Handle On Mindfulness

During breakups, it is so easy to dwell on the past and run over what went wrong over and over again. Getting a handle on mindfulness and focusing on ‘the now’ will help you with this problem. It will also help you with life in general, so you should find you emerge from the breakup far stronger than you were in the relationship.
